What the SolarWinds hack means for your organisation

An advanced threat actor has compromised the SolarWinds Orion software platform, a unified IT monitoring solution that will often have access to an organisation’s most sensitive secrets. Public reporting has revealed details of the threat actor having used compromising network management software as part of a supply chain attack against multiple high-profile victims. The compromise inserted a malicious “backdoor,” known as “SUNBURST”, into one of the libraries of this application that would give the threat actor a foothold in the affected system. Any servers with the vulnerable software installed should be isolated and investigated for evidence of compromise and the hotfix to the SolarWinds Orion Platform installed which will update the product to a newer version.

POPIA Webinar with F-Secure and Michalsons Attorneys

The enforcement of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act is commencing on 01 July 2021. The Act is essentially a code of conduct that all organisations in South Africa will need to comply with and have the necessary systems in place to manage employee, customer and supplier data that have personal information. It will also be compulsory in terms of the Act for all organisations to provide evidence of personal data protection systems having been implemented, especially in the event of a breach, in order to avoid prosecution and the substantial fines that may result from non-compliance. Fortunately, F-Secure has a substantial amount of knowledge and hands-on experience resulting from similar regulations – the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), implemented in May 2018 in the European Union where their head office is based. A Webinar by F-Secure together with Michalsons Attorneys who specialise in the POPI Act will be held on 24 March 2021 to discuss POPIA with interested parties. Cybersecurity trends in 2021
The Corona virus pandemic during 2020 has fundamentally changed the traditional work environment for nearly all organisations and enforced reliance on remote workforces. Taking employees out of the office is by no means a bad thing, however cyber-criminals are craftier than the average Joe Soap and will take advantage of the potential backdoors, lack of experience and secure infrastructure associated with work-from-home staff. The 2021 threat landscape is a potential sea of new vulnerabilities and hurdles to overcome as insider threats get redefined, the work-from-home trend continues, and mobile endpoints start becoming the attack vector of choice. Work-from-home staff also no longer have the privilege of being ignorant to cyber security practices and policies, and organisations’ IT departments are needing to get more involved in managing important communications concerning cyber security with all their users.
