The security of your IOT devices is now more important than ever

The number of intelligent objects that are being connected to the internet and to each other continues to grow at a rapid rate. IOT devices have infiltrated the heart of most operational and infrastructure systems, thus forming a solid standard of our current and future smart devices. Schools, homes and businesses’ growing dependence on IOT devices; brought along the inevitable expectancy of manufacturers to implement strict security standards. There is no solution in the marketplace to protect a network from the increasing amount of online threats prevalent today. This poses a more complex security risk and may have serious consequences.

The number of devices, vehicles and other appliances already exceeds Earth’s population and is expected to expand. With most devices being smart devices in modern times, a growth of cloud services and IOT devices are also to be expected. It is then apparent that the amount of potential targets will increase and puts all IOT users at risk.

Rising IOT concerns are connected to the escalating number of cyber attacks. WannaCry, the largest ransomware outbreak in history, affected businesses and organisations of all sizes. Infiltrating railway systems, banks, energy companies and even organisations is a clear depiction of how securing IOT devices affects everyone.

Internet of Things represents a considerable threat to consumers. The inadequate regulations regarding its security and use should not delay securing these devices. Consumers need to be made aware of the risks and security features of their existing IoT devices by the manufacturers. Considering the amount of IoT devices are set to double in the next two years and then double soon after, governments also need to focus on devices coming to market by focusing on regulations and certifications. Securing IOT devices is a risk we should no longer take.
