Secure locks for your home

Locks, whether smart or traditional, are designed to keep intruders and other unwanted people out while at the same time letting the right people in without much hassle. A proper lock is a crucial component to home security. Having a secure door lock is one of the most effective ways to protect your home and ever since smart locks came onto the market, there has been an ongoing debate about whether they are safe and more secure than traditional locks.

Traditional locks are physical security solutions with tangible keys we are all familiar with. Alternatively, smart lock solutions are controlled remotely from a device using a wi-fi or Bluetooth connection. The comparison between the two leads to a very important question: which lock is actually more secure?

The one big issue facing smart locks is that anything that is connected to the internet can be vulnerable to hacking, indicating that there is still a chance of someone being able to break in by hacking the lock. If you choose to use traditional keys for your home, you’re still at risk to criminals physically breaking the tangible obstacle to gain entry into your home.

Advanced security measures in current times have allowed for traditional locks to evolve. Now there are high-security locks on the market that are anti-snap and anti-pick. Securing your ‘smart’ home with impeccable cyber protection such as F-Secure SENSE minimises the chances of your network getting hacked because the SENSE router gives you fast wi-fi while protecting all web surfing in your home. It blocks malicious websites and other threats, securing all your smart devices against cyber attacks. Even though there are solutions to the common risks involved with the latter, the solutions available to us do not make us bulletproof to the dangers out there.

Smart locks trump traditional locks when it comes to convenience, automation and efficiency. In the ‘internet-of-things’ society that we live in today, smart locks are just as insecure as the ‘smart’ home technology we use every day. When deciding which the most secure lock is for your home, you need to think about your particular living situation and establish whether it’s more likely an intruder will pick your lock, or hack it. The security measure you choose to use for protecting your home should be tailored to best suit your lifestyle.
