Why Cyber Security is still important

Cyber attacks are more prevalent today than a few years ago. With these occurrances happening daily as seen by the media publishing the information, we should all now have the mentality of everyone being at risk. The number of cyber crimes is increasing at a rapid rate with no sign of change.

With the increase in attacks, more serious trends emerge as a result. Cyber criminals used to be identified as individuals or small groups; now there are partnerships between criminal organisations and malicious technological professionals. Individuals and companies rely too heavily on software security measures without having a back-up plan. As the online realm grows, it becomes more difficult to control your online security. The risks of cyber attacks are only getting worse and it is imperative for all internet users not to forget to protect themselves against it.

Here are a few tips that will maintain a safe network:

  • Don’t share personal information over the phone or via email

Cyber criminals are known to contact people claiming to represent an existing company, such as the SARS. They may even possess some of your personal information; which they share with you in order to seem legitimate. Do not respond and it is advised that you ask for their name and a call back number. Then, contact the company they claim to represent and find out if they’re really trying to contact you.

  • Keep your operating system, browser, and anti-virus software updated

Companies often offer such updates free of charge.

  • Opt for a difficult password

The most commonly used passwords are also the most easily stolen. As passwords are often virtually the only defence between you and would-be cyber criminals, it is imperative that you create strong passwords and that you do not use the same password for more than one account.

  • Never click on links sent to you via email

Even if you’re sure an email is perfectly legitimate, the safest practice is to go to the company’s website and log on directly.

Cyber criminals are continually looking for ways to get around basic safety measures. Personal information of clients and employees should be protected at all costs. Considering the increased cyber security risks, taking the time to increase your knowledge of the latest cyber security trends is a highly recommended.
