How to combat the cybersecurity skills shortage in your organisation

cybersecurity skills shortage

Internet access has grown exponentially over the past decade as rapid advances in technology have facilitated how we live today. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are also everywhere now, found in huge corporations and even in the average person’s home as almost everything to do with technology has become a computer. A bed is not just a simple bed anymore as some have effectively become. It is a computer with sensors packaged into a mattress. Neither is a light bulb the simple devise we have come to know it as anymore either. It is a computer that provides light in different colours for different moods or times of the day or night and can save energy in your home while being and can be controlled from an app on your smartphone.

Security in everything is now in high demand because of the insecurities of all these new devices. Security has traditionally been a fairly predictable business in most industries. Now it has become a necessity for organisations and people alike with how cyberspace has grown to become a part of our daily lives. Together with the growth of the internet, cybersecurity threats have grown simultaneously.

Unsurprisingly, a skills gap in cybersecurity has emerged from the explosion of demand for computing and the associated security requirements it brings. The big question being asked is: How can security teams continue to be effective while facing such a skills shortage? There are a few strategies available that would positively contribute to the overall safety of your IT network, as listed below:

Piece-buying products for specific security needs in your IT network is one method to follow. Identifying the most important cybersecurity needs in your organisation could be patched with definitive products to solve these issues.

Outsourcing cybersecurity services is another approach to implement into your business. If you can afford to hire a group of people who are supplying this service to more than one company, your business will inevitably benefit from a “connected” strategy, whereby threat landscapes are shared and solved all across their database.

However, automation trumps the above mentioned solutions. Having an automated system put in place for advanced threat detection will eradicate most forms of human error. A great example is F-Secure’s Rapid Detection & Response (RDR) solution that enables users to respond to threats promptly with built-in automation and guidance based on the latest threat intelligence. When a breach occurs, you need more than just a notification. F-Secure’s RDR does all the work for you, by identifying the specifics of the attack and planning the best response possible for your network.

Combining all of these strategies in your organisation will result in an efficient system against the online threat landscape. Your organisation can now handle these threats with less expertise because you have systems in place that are primarily focussed on securing your IT network and backing it up. This allows for individuals to be more productive by focussing on their jobs, whilst cybersecurity threats are being taken care of in the background and a safe IT network maintained.
