3 Ways to Help Keep IT Systems Secure

Technology continues to present new opportunities for business owners. Increased mobility and productivity offered by these platforms are just some of the advantages of moving business online. As useful as all these modern inventions are though, they also present growing security concerns.

Online security is a common concern shared among the cyber community and one should prioritise protecting one’s own online footprint. The culture of changing passwords regularly, updating system software and avoiding unknown attachments have been etched into the operation of all companies using the internet in the workplace. Here are 3 tips you may have ignored previously but are effective in helping keep your network secure:

  1. Provide basic training

Countless security breaches occur as a result of human error or carelessness. Building a corporate culture that stresses the importance of online security should be promoted. Training programmes that warn against, and provide solutions for malicious threats will promote smart internet usage among employees.

  1. Segmentation on networks

Separating your data on several networks allows for the segments not having to share traffic. This means that if a computer becomes compromised in one segment, it does not automatically mean that the attacker has access to information on another segment. This effectively limits threat exposure.

  1. Think before clicking

Use your judgement when receiving suspicious looking emails. Practice the habit of being able to identify fake websites. Do not fool yourself into thinking that antivirus software protects against all threats. Even the best of these shields can’t necessarily protect your organisation against one of the biggest security threats: the people sitting in front of their computers.

The basic truth behind internet security is that the internet itself is not a secure environment. There will likely always be weak links in the chain of data exchange. Although dealing with the complexities of maintaining your online security can prove challenging, practising good online habits allows for these malicious threats to appear less intimidating and more manageable.
