3 VPN Myths Uncovered

There are many misconceptions surrounding Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s) and how to use them more effectively and efficiently. When discussing how to secure data transfers, IT professionals unavoidably end up comparing VPN’s. Even though there are many ways to transfer data securely from one network to the next, VPN’s are often the main approach. However, a VPN alone will not protect your online presence entirely. Here are 3 myths that will aid in a better understanding of the concept of a VPN.

  1. A VPN is all you need to ensure security

A VPN is a private connection that passes over the public Internet. The average internet user may not necessarily be able to penetrate such a link, but hackers are well equipped with tools to read data inside of VPN’s. Even though a security alert may be triggered when such ill activity occurs, but the damage is done. Data has been compromised and limiting the exploitation thereof will be a harder task to avoid. Therefore, it is imperative that all data sent over the Internet, be it over a VPN or through other methods, should be encrypted if the data is sensitive or confidential.

  1. VPNs = Anonymity

A VPN is designed to provide data security, not to keep the user’s footprint anonymous. A skilled technician can identify a user who tries to use a VPN for malicious purposes because the data still is being transmitted over the public Internet.

  1. VPNs protect users from cyber attacks

Just because you employ a VPN, does not mean you are immune from malware, viruses and other online threats. A VPN is not a firewall, so if you use a VPN to download infected content, your system will end up infected. It’s a good idea to add a firewall that is properly configured with the right defensive tools for your device.

Even small companies and individuals get breached. VPNs are the best approach to enhancing security. Find which VPN is best suited to your business needs to ensure the best security solution.
