US State of Maine hacked

1.3 million residents in the north-eastern state of Maine in the United States of America were hacked in May this year. Representing 94% of the state’s population, the victims had their data stolen in a ransomware attack by a gang of cybercriminals that exploited the state agencies of Maine with a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer tool. The US government published a notice about the cybersecurity incident, mentioning that the hackers had stolen social security numbers, drivers’ licenses, state and taxpayer identification numbers together with individuals’ birthdates. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services together with the Maine Department of Education were the organisations that most of the data was stolen from.
